It shows how McCoy, a millionaire Wall Street investment bond salesman, finds his life in ruins after accidentally running down a black teen-ager on a Bronx off-ramp, while in the midst of an adulterous liaison thereby turning prey for what seems a city-full of rabble-rousers and opportunists. How the mighty are fallen! Such is the theme of Wolfe’s novel. And, like McCoy, it came crashing down, under a fusillade of location-shooting woes, scathing “buzz,” scornful reviews, audience indifference and a final culminating recognition (by an American Film poll of the nation’s critics) as “the worst movie of 1990.” ![]() ![]() Much like the novel’s protagonist Sherman McCoy, “Vanities,” the movie, began with seemingly every advantage-high position, beauty, celebrity, $40-50 million behind it. ![]()
