5/29/2023 0 Comments 1453 by Roger Crowley![]() ![]() The Byzantine Empire survived for a thousand years.Įnter Sultan Mehmet II of the Islamic Ottomans. The Eastern Roman Empire morphed into the Byzantine Empire. Constantine the Great certainly did deserve this moniker – the weight of these two decisions still bear down upon us. We learn about Constantine’s conversion to Christianity (on his deathbed admittedly – better late than never!!) So letting that sink in, he moved the Capital of the Roman Empire and also started the legitimacy of Christianity in the Roman Empire. We learn of the origins of this city, which came about when Constantine the Great decided to move the capital of the Roman Empire from Rome to Byzantium which he renamed Constantinople (modern day Istanbul) in around 330 CE. ![]() The author systematically proceeds through this epic story – and thankfully commences with some wonderfully drawn maps of Asia Minor showing the geography of the area which made Constantinople such an important strategic location. The results of this period endure to this day. Constantinople, The Last Great Siege 1453, by Roger Crowley is a thoroughly entertaining, rich, detailed, violent, intriguing and riveting story of one of the most significant periods of history. ![]() 5/29/2023 0 Comments Er nurses book![]() ![]() ![]() These nurses play a critical role in providing life-saving care to patients and are highly valued members of the healthcare team. It shows how McCoy, a millionaire Wall Street investment bond salesman, finds his life in ruins after accidentally running down a black teen-ager on a Bronx off-ramp, while in the midst of an adulterous liaison thereby turning prey for what seems a city-full of rabble-rousers and opportunists. How the mighty are fallen! Such is the theme of Wolfe’s novel. And, like McCoy, it came crashing down, under a fusillade of location-shooting woes, scathing “buzz,” scornful reviews, audience indifference and a final culminating recognition (by an American Film poll of the nation’s critics) as “the worst movie of 1990.” ![]() ![]() Much like the novel’s protagonist Sherman McCoy, “Vanities,” the movie, began with seemingly every advantage-high position, beauty, celebrity, $40-50 million behind it. ![]() 5/28/2023 0 Comments Belle by cameron dokey![]() Both approaches have their value and I enjoy them both. ![]() I enjoy these types of fairy tale retellings and I think it's somewhat unfair to compare them to the types of retellings where the author takes the bones of the fairy tale and then fleshes them out with their own unique story. I'd recommend them both equally, but I personally lean toward Dokey because we met first (also, her book has the more beautiful cover. Both stories are pleasant, slightly beautiful, forgettable in the details, but remembered fondly in the broad strokes. There isn't really much to either story beyond that, and nothing more is needed. ![]() ![]() What I mean is that the characters don't have depth, the romance is very undeveloped, and the plot doesn't always make perfect sense, but none of that is a bad thing because it's supposed to be that way in a fairy tale.īoth versions stick closely to the bones of the fairy tale: family of sisters lose a mother and fortune, father has an incident with the beast and a rose (a man whose appearance and estate are cursed because his personality is beastly), girl takes place of father in a bargain with the beast, girl and beast find love, enchantment is broken, happily ever afters abound. They're both written in that superficial way that works really well for fairy tale retellings. 2017 Keep the Books Off the Shelf Challengeīoth versions are so similar that I don't know that my opinion of them wouldn't just be reversed had I read them in the opposite order. ![]() ![]() ![]() In this dramatic historical and psychological epic, Alexander Waugh traces the triumphs and vicissitudes of a family held together by a fanatical love of music yet torn apart by money, madness, conflicts of loyalty and the cataclysmic upheaval of two world wars. My desire was to participate in the process of individual change and the strengthening of community, but the intellectual and emotional baggage of past experiences with this faith community gave me some reasons to pause and wonder whether there was an even more inclusive approach that we could take by modifying the language of the book to be more universal, finding common points of reference in the experience of being human. I recently came across a book about spiritual disciplines that is specific to the practices and teachings of a particular religion, Christianity. ![]() With the death of Jean Vanier, there is a desire that has risen in my mind to honour his legacy by continuing his work in a way that extends his joy and his ethos into a movement that helps us to heal our sense of loneliness and our desire to be loved, to help us find belonging by including people in community and finding freedom through forgiveness. ![]() |
